How to deal with unmanaged waste and pollution is one of the most pressing questions of our times. As it stands, we throw away and burn far too much, and the carbon footprint this generates has proved disastrous for the environment, the atmosphere, and even our health. But by exploiting the benefits of waste management, we can help to mitigate these risks and provide a safer future for our children.

One key area of focus for controlling waste outflows is plastic. Currently, millions of tonnes of plastic waste finds its way into our oceans, destabilising the ecosystem and tainting our lovely seaside views. But H&M has taken a proactive approach to dealing with this blight on our beaches, creating a sustainably sourced collection of clothing: Conscious Exclusive.

    What is Conscious Exclusive?

Conscious Exclusive is H&M’s annual collection of sustainably designed and manufactured clothing. With it, H&M seeks to combine visionary fashionable designs with progressive and sustainable manufacturing methods and materials, and with supermodel Natalia Vodianova onboard as the face of the collection, it does so in style.

But how exactly is Conscious Exclusive sustainable?

H&M prides itself on the sustainability of Conscious Exclusive, and central to its sustainable design is the repurposing of shoreline plastic waste, a monumentally harmful and persistent problem.

For instance, on average an alarming 8 million tonnes of plastic finds it way into our oceans every year, much of which ends up on our beaches. Even more worrying is the fact that the amount of plastic that finds its way into the sea is set to increase tenfold over the next ten years if serious action isn’t taken soon.

As such, to reduce shoreline plastic waste H&M has committed to using BIONIC®, a recycled polyester produced from shoreline plastic waste, in creating their Conscious Exclusive range. Through efficient waste management schemes, H&M also hope to stop the plastic from ever reaching the ocean from their products, too.

The Conscious Exclusive collection is just the tip of the iceberg with H&M’s sustainability project. Since 2015, all of H&M’s products have been created using 20% sustainable materials. Meanwhile, plans for the future will see 100% of cotton sustainably sourced by 2020.
