Hiring a skip can be a confusing process, especially if you’re not in the construction industry and have never had to consider the logistics of disposing of large quantities of rubbish and waste. Is skip size important?
Yes, skip size is important! There are many different skip sizes available for use, and there will be a perfect skip size for your project. If you choose a skip that is far too large for your project, you will overpay for what you need, which could send you over budget, whereas if you underestimate the skip size you will need, you may end up having to hire a second skip to hold the rest of your waste, costing you more money and time as you wait for your new skip to arrive. It is always best to slightly overestimate the skip size you will need than to underestimate it, as a slightly larger skip is much less of an inconvenience than one too small.

Can a skip be left on the road?
A skip can be left on the road if you have no suitable private land, such as a driveway, garden or building site to put the skip on, but if you plan to do this you must obtain a licence prior to hiring the skip, as there may need to be temporary cones or reflective markings put in place to ensure that traffic can see the skip clearly. It can take 3 – 7 days for your local council to organise a permit, and they’re only eligible for 7 – 28 days at a time so be prepared for this. It is important to note that skips must not block pavements in any way so your road must be wide enough to suitably fit a skip while allowing traffic to move around it.
Can you be denied a skip hire permit?
It is very unlikely to be denied a skip hire permit, especially if you are going through the proper channels and are using a verified skip hire company, so it isn’t something to worry about. In the very rare case that your skip hire permit has been refused, you can opt for a wait and load service, so there will always be an effective way to dispose of your rubbish!
Does the access to my property matter?
It would be useful if it is easy to access your property as larger skips can be quite cumbersome and hard to navigate around narrow, winding streets or roads with lots of parked cars. The area you want your skip to be on needs to be around 9 feet wide to make delivering and picking up the skip easier, and the ground needs to be strong and sturdy to take the weight of the lorry. If you are concerned that access to your property might be problematic, let your skip hire company know in advance and alternative means of access can be worked out – a professional company will be experienced in handling tricky manoeuvres so a solution will always be found!
Are there any types of waste that are not permitted to be put into a skip?
Any form of hazardous waste cannot be disposed of in a skip. Examples include:
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- Fridge freezers
- Car tyres
- Toxic chemicals such as oil, diesel, petrol and paint
- Asbestos
- Clinical and medical waste
These items are harmful to the environment and therefore must be safely labelled and disposed of; something that cannot be done in a skip disposal. It is also inadvisable to dispose of liquids in a skip.
What becomes of the waste that has been collected?
Your waste will be transferred to the main site and the rubbish sorted into general waste and recyclables in order to avoid large masses of unnecessary waste ending up in a landfill.
