There was a recent scandal in the Croydon area when it was discovered that two vans filled with waste were suspected of fly-tipping. One van was said to be disposing of commercial waste in residential areas and the other got rid of waste at a recycling centre, two acts which are illegal and can cause a lot of issues for those living nearby.

The white Ford Transit van was towed by the council in Thornton Heath when it was reported by local residents that rubbish was dumped and left by a block of garages. Another separate incident was also reported as a blue van was seized due to CCTV footage which showed a man getting rid of waste beside the recycle bins at the Monk’s Orchard Recycling Center in Shirley.

The incident has drawn criticism from Clean and Green Croydon spokesperson Stuart Collins, who has outlined how unacceptable fly-tipping is and made it clear that this kind of illegal action won’t be tolerated moving forward. Although further action has yet to be taken, making an example of these particular cases will hopefully deter anyone else who is considering doing it too.

These two acts may seem small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they have brought fly-tipping to the local media’s attention, successfully highlighted an issue which can have a very negative impact on the environment. With such vigilant efforts made to improve recycling and keep waste management under control, hearing that some choose to disregard this and instead dump waste in unsuitable locations can be extremely frustrating.

If you are caught fly-tipping it could have a detrimental impact on your business in terms of your reputation in the local area, plus the act itself can result in financial penalties which no business wants to have to deal with. As there are plenty of easily accessible solutions for large businesses to look into, it’s definitely not worth the risk.

It is difficult to understand why this kind of thoughtless act happens when there are so many options available to dispose of waste sensibly and avoid fly-tipping altogether. It’s important to know and follow the correct procedures when it comes to both recycling and waste removal and to do so safely. Separating your waste carefully ensures that when you do decide to take it from your home or business, it will be stress-free and simple to do.
