Not every skip hire company will let you put your mattress in a skip — but we do!

Mattress disposal is a tricky business. If you’re looking to dispose of your old mattress in a safe, legal and hassle-free way, make sure you use a trusted skip hire company with the right resources and team for the job. This article will teach you all you need to know about getting rid of your old mattress.

    Waste in skip including mattress

Can you put a mattress in any skip?

It isn’t common practice to put a mattress in a skip —  most skip companies prohibit it. As a result, many people end up dumping their mattresses illegally. Mattresses are the one of most common items to be fly tipped, and this contributes to the decline of many urban areas. Click here to learn more about fly tipping.

Some skip hire companies, such as Hinton’s Waste, allow you to dispose of your mattress in their skip for a small fee.

Why is there an added fee?

Unlike most household waste, mattresses are cumbersome items. Due to their size and bulk, they will almost always exceed the fill lines of our skips, making them tricky and more dangerous to transport.

We ask for the extra fee to account for the extra labour required to remove your mattress safely. Our company chooses to offer this service because we have over a decade of experience in removals, and we have the skills to remove your mattress successfully.

What happens to my mattress after it is disposed of?

Once we’ve removed the filled skip and transported your mattress, we will endeavour to recycle it at one of our specialist recycling facilities. Here, we will separate your mattress into its fundamental parts and provide the core materials for manufacturers to reuse in new products. This way, your mattress doesn’t end up as waste in a landfill.

How else can you dispose of a mattress?

You have a few options when it comes to old mattress removal. These include:

    • Donation — You could choose to donate your mattress to a charity or furniture shop, but it must be in decent condition. This will most likely require you to transport the mattress yourself, which is a tricky task. If you do wish to donate your mattress, make sure you contact the charity first to ensure they will accept your donation.
    • Local collection — Many local councils will offer to remove your mattress for you, However, many local councils lack the resources and facilities to recycle your mattress, meaning it is likely to end up in a landfill.
    • Professional removal — The absolute best way to dispose of your mattress is to put it in a skip of a reputable waste disposal company who are happy to collect and recycle it.

Here at Hinton’s Waste, we’ve been in the waste removals business for over a decade. Our goal is to help domestic and commercial clients get rid of their waste, no matter how big or small the project. Plus, we will recycle as much of your waste as we can, ensuring that by cleaning up your home — you’re also cleaning up the world. Have a mattress you need removing? Give our team a call now.
