Did you know that 400,000 tonnes of carpet is sent to landfill every year in the UK alone? It’s a staggering figure, and one that could easily be avoided with a little forethought. Contrary to popular belief, carpet is widely recycled across the UK. Just dispose of your old carpet in one of our skips and we’ll do the rest.

At Hinton’s, we aim to recycle as much as we possibly can from our skips. Want to know more? In this article we explain all you need to know about carpet recycling.

Can I Put Carpet In A Skip?

    Can all carpets be recycled?

Almost all types of carpets can be recycled! Most carpets are made out of wool or nylon synthetics, both of which are suitable for recycling. You might find some difficulty in recycling your carpet if it is made from petroleum-based synthetic fibres, but this is rare. Check the label or the manufacturer’s website to determine exactly what your carpet is made out of and if it is suitable for recycling.

It is not recommended to chop up or shred your carpet into tiny pieces. Doing so may hinder the sorting process and could result in your carpet being diverted to landfill.

Which skip size do I need for recycling a carpet?

Choosing the right skip size for your project is important for ensuring you get the best bang for your buck. Choose one that’s too small and you might be fined for overfilling your skip, get one that’s too large and you will be needlessly paying for excess space.

Which size skip you’ll need for recycling a carpet will depend on its size. While we don’t recommend chopping or shredding your carpet, you can fold it up to conserve space.

Use our skip size calculator to work out the perfect skip size for your needs.

    Tips for removing carpet safely

    • Use protective gear
    • Detach the carpet from the tack strip
    • Remove the carpet pad
    • Remove the tack strips
